CHAMPAGNE

What inspired the name of the band?

One of our mother’s suggested the name after the champagne as Magnum champagne was quite a popular drink at the club where my other band Fred’s Box used to play. After Fred left and Tony joined we needed a new name and so Magnum got suggested and was taken up by the band.

How did you get recognised?

By doing it the old fashioned way. We played the club circuit in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Our brand of rock was new and invigorating and we were fortunate that a fair few rock stars came out to visit us like Roger Taylor and Tony Iommi. Roger later produced one of our records. And when we sat down and recorded our debut album in 1978, we already had quite a following.

HAVING FUN

You’ve been going for a long time, are you still enjoying it?

Oh definitely! We’re really enjoying what we’re doing, we’re having fun and the music is good. The fans seem to be enjoying it as much as we are, which is important.

How is recording the new album going?

We’re about halfway done with the album. It should be released in January, and when it’s done it will be announced via our Facebook page.
