What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
Llyn Y Cwn (Welsh – lake of the dogs) is a small lake at 715m in the Glyder mountain range of Snowdoina, North Wales.
I draw inspiration from the North Wales landscape and my participation on Arctic research cruises, I like to make patterns in the notes, I’m very interested in maths.
How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
the start is always a field recording, I usually try to work on a specific project collecting relevant recordings and adding the music on top, atmosphere is more important to me than musicality.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
Mostly for self interest, I make the music that I want to hear, if somebody else likes it then that is a bonus, the other constraint is my “studio” – usually just a laptop and a pair of headphones, I wrote most of the new album whilst sat on a ship.
How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
I’ve been transposing the music to guitar this week ready for live performances, I like to actually play something, else it isn’t really live is it? I also like to make videos to accompany the music, something to take peoples eyes away from me.

What plans do you have for the future?
Got a small festival lined up for the summer, I’m doing a collaboration with Standard Grey, I’ve got an up beat side project called Deliquescent Crystals with an album coming out, and I’m always working on the next LYC album – busy times!
