It’s been thirty-nine years since Angel Witch released their debut album, thirty-nine years in which their influence has only continued to grow. They were one of the traiblazers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and now they’re back with a new album.
“Don’t Turn Your Back,” is a riff symphony, turning through the files of the day, shimmering in and out of light. It displays the skills of the band brilliantly. The vocals are on point, allowing for a nice little twist and turn, slowly and heavily bringing together competing aspects. “Death From Andromeda,” is a galloping monster, that brings together different aspects of the band, and shows that even all these years later they’ve got what it takes to command. “We Are Damned,” is a monstrous symphony. It’s got those ballsy riffs that made Angel Witch such a surefire start during their initial era, and now it’s allowed them to grow evermore. “The Night Is Calling,” is haunting. A terrifying prospect, on the back of a blade, which demonstrates just where the power is. Vocalist and guitarist Kevin Heybourne’s vocals are phenomenal.
“Condemned,” is a slow moving riff monster. Close your eyes and let the music engulf you, taking you in through the journey of the mind and the never ending chaos. Perfectly encapsulated by this song. “Window of Despair,” keeps things real, shimmering into being off the back of a groovy riff, and a melody that is out of this world. “I am Infamy,” takes the time to really measure up, producing a song that levels through the field and ensures some diversity in melodical direction. “Angel of Light,” the title track is something else entirely. It is a mixture of melody, darkness and pure chaos. The perfect way to finish off the album.
Angel of Light is out on 1st November, via Metal Blade Records.
