An interview with Superlung
An interview with Superlung
What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?
The band name SuperLung came from when Zimmy (Vocals) and Forrest (Bass) were stationed in the US Navy in Italy in the early 90’s. Everyone smoked cigarettes and when someone took a deep drag, we would say 44 Slackjaw SuperLung. Originally that was going to be the band name but we shortened it to just SuperLung. Our influences include a wide variety including Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, 311 to name a few.
How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
We usually write at home, especially now with COVID crisis. We will share ideas via text or email so everyone can come to rehearsal with their own ideas for the song. We hash the details out together and get the song structure down, then we will write vocals. I think we write based on our lives and things that happen in the world that everyone can relate to. Once in a while when we are starved for ideas someone will throw out a theme and say go with it. We like our songs to be relatable to everyone, things that everyone experiences either as just being a human or a societal experience that has us all in the same boat.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
We call ourselves a Working Class Alternative Rock Band. We all come from that backround which is the majority of the world. We write the music we do to bring people together and let them know that they are not alone in their everyday battles with life. We all go through endeavors, some good, some bad, but there is always one common thing that binds us all and that is music!! We want the listener to feel, let down your guard, and escape for a small time.
How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
We usually just decide prior to playing shows what songs will be on the set list. We want the show to flow so we come out swinging and progress from there. We want the crowd to interact with us, shows are all about the fans, without you, there is no us.

What plans do you have for the future?
Like everyone else in 2020, we had to shut down live shows due to COVID. So we have begun writing a new album. We hope to get into the studio to record in late 2020 early 2021 so we can have a new album out by Spring.
