An Interview With One Of The Last

An Interview With One Of The Last

NEVER SAY DIE

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

To be honest, we’re not exactly sure who came up with the name or why. We’ve just been telling people that this will be “one of the last” times we start a new band! It’s now or never for us and if we’re going down, we’re going down swinging! Our influences are other “never say die” kind of bands such as Metallica, Trivium, Bullet for my Valentine, Killswitch Engage and Parkway Drive.

How do you approach songwriting?

We never start off with a reason to write a song. Either Mario or Parker (guitarists) will come up with a riff. Then we add a simple drum beat and Tripp (bassist) comes up with a bassline. I (John – Vocals) will add a vocal melody and we build off that. I personally don’t write music for myself but for other people’s enjoyment. All of my lyrics are about self-help and self-empowerment. We want you to listen to a song and know that you’re capable of great things! Just keep a positive mindset, be kind to others and stay humble and hungry!

ESCAPE

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Music for all of us is an escape. There’s literally a song for every emotion. If you’re happy, listen to Ska or EDM. If you’re sad, listen to The Smiths or The Cure. If you’re pissed off, might I suggest some Hatebreed. While every genre has a collection of different songs, hard rock/metal are generally aggressive or negative to an outsider. A lot of people believe that metal is just self-harm, hatred or gore. To an extent, they’re right but why can’t it also be positive in their eyes? Why can’t it be uplifting? Why can’t we change the status quo? That’s why we write what we write. The songs are pretty heavy but the lyrics are always positive. We want to get more people into metal music while still giving metal fans something to enjoy. So far, I think we’re doing pretty well!

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

With every song we write, any of them can open or close a show. That gives us a lot more room to try different things. It also depends on the show. If we’re with heavier bands, we’ll play our heavier songs. If we’re with pop punk bands, we’ll keep things a little more melodic. We want to share the stage with any band that will have us and we want to try and win over EVERY audience!

WHAT WORKS

DRUMMER

What plans do you have for the future?

Right now, we’re searching for a drummer but once that’s over, we have plans to go into the studio. Before the pandemic, we wanted to average a new song every 2 months. Once we lock down a drummer, we’re going to try and do that again. We want to keep up with our promoting and networking as well. Once live shows happen again, we’re going to hit the NYC area hard while also exploring new areas. Trust us, this is only the beginning!
