REAL
What inspired the formation of the band and what are your influences?
The band was formed 33 years ago. In school I (Koefte) wasn’t a great student and music was my only interest. It felt real to me, something I could truly connect with. I played drums as a kid and sang. My friends and I would go to a few festivals and shows, and see bands performing and that was when I realised that that was what I wanted to do. So, we got a band together and started playing out in the street at first. Our songs were a mixture of shuffle and faster tempo rock/psychobilly music. As we kept performing I found that that this was the only job I wanted to do. We got some help from these youth centres that looked for bands to perform occasionally, so we’d get a space to practice and sometimes perform as well, to really practice what we were doing.
In terms of influences, it was anything really, rock, rockabilly, punk, metal. Anything that felt real to us at the time and still feels real to us now.
Could you tell us about the new album, are there any songs that you’d want listeners to check out in particular?
I’m not sure, it’s quite a difficult one. I write a song that speaks for itself and goes well for a period of time. Sometimes there will be outside influences, but all in all it is definitely a personal thing, there are some songs where I hear parts of them and go ‘oh this is great!’ In terms of writing the album it’s essentially talking about what happens, what we’re thinking and what’s happening outside.

SAFE
How has covid impacted you and what are your plans for the future?
It’s been terrible, what’s been happening, obviously being a musician, this is all I know to do, so in that sense it’s been very bad. In another it’s been good because it’s allowed us to work in the studio and to write and record. But on the other side, I’m not too scared about Covid personally, I don’t have any kids or family with me, but I do keep my fingers crossed for my friends that they remain safe.
