An interview with Karly Jewell

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?
I started out on my own so kept my name plus that’s who I am so I guess I want people to know who I am as an artist. Being the artist I am today My late grandfather was my biggest influence and inspiration. Music inspires me so there’s so many artists to name but recently thinking about when it comes to writing I would have to say its Mars, Dave and Adrian that influence me he most. I mean it’s their playing their sound that create that makes the music so yeah, they are the most important. I mean we fire each other up get the good energy and it just happens.
How do you approach song writing? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
I never approach songs they approach me. Sometimes they come out of nowhere I don’t know what comes first when they hit me. Once I hear it I focus on the hook and how to create a story. I don’t think about it too much I just let it happen. I know it might sound crazy but sometimes I feel like it’s beyond something I know, almost like my soul writes these songs it gets deep. With the band when we work together the songs just fall into place. I don’t go looking for themes but in saying that having Adrain join us we have really been given another beautiful creative element to work with and he has an incredible sound and when he plays guitar it’s a new journey so I think there will be some new tasty heavy coming up. Dave also has been working on some magic sound of his own so as a band we have a little exploring to do. When I’m alone writing I just let the fire light up listen to the song and tell the story. I also write from pain and sadness and life events music is a way of healing and I guess I sometimes find myself writing my way out of the dark to create something magic. I realised having this darkness lingering inside me would become almost a superpower because I write and write and I keep writing. I mean I also write about the good times and the adventures we share as a band.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
It’s all feeling and that’s who I am, that’s who the band are. We all found a home in rock but we all know who we are in sound and together we just bring that feeling to the table. Music for me and writing is all I know and it can be any genre because it’s always a feeling music is my emotion I guess.
How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
Depends on the show, the line up all the new ones and normally I have a brand new song ready for each live show as a surprise.
We are the band that always ends up being the loudest and we just kind of keep it real. We rock up, plug in and rock out the best way we can.
We transpose with passion and heart.

What plans do you have for the future?
This year is huge for us already so the future I always see big things and if not, I’m dreaming up them big things to make happen. We plan on recording more and smashing out as many songs as we can this year, big plans on Aus shows as it looks like we won’t be leaving anytime soon for international shows but as soon as we can Japan, a return to the states and the U.K has been added to the list. So the future I see more rock and roll more adventure’s and some more of this making our on rock and roll history.
