What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
Our band name, Black It Out, came from people pretending something never happened, or someone never entered their life. More like how when reports are requested using the freedom of information act in the United States, the reports on UFOs and UAPs are all blacked out. Our influences vary. It all depends on the songs we’re working on. We’ve been influenced by Blink-182, Sum 41, A Day to Remember, and Senses Fail.
We were heavily influenced by Karen compilations on YouTube, seeing Karens in the wild, and Anndy Negative’s TikTok experience when we wrote our most recent single, “Live, Laugh, Love,” feat. Anndy Negative. Anndy wrote a song called “When We Were Young,” and the gatekeeping Karens of TikTok were rude to him. So, we wrote a song about Karens and asked if Anndy Negative would be our feature, and he agreed. “Live, Laugh, Love” is on Spotify and wherever music is streamed or sold! Check it out!
How do you approach songwriting?
Bryan and I email each other our ideas, and we hash them out. We call and email each other; then rerecord the part with our discussed changes until we have a track we’re happy with. Bryan and I (Shaun) both write the songs. Lately, Bryan has been writing the music and having me write the melody. That’s going to change in the future.
We bounce musical themes off each other until one sticks. In terms of writing lyrics, we figure out whether the song will be serious or humorous. Then we pick a topic. We tackle serious themes like in “Reflections” feat. Promise Game. “Reflections” is about how my brother’s fiancée abused our mom and my brother. “Live, Laugh, Love” feat. Anndy Negative is about Karens, and that song looks at them light-heartedly. Bryan loves Christmas songs. We’ve done many Christmas songs. “Merry Christmas, Don’t Get Me Anything” and “The War On Christmas” are humorous tracks.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
We love how fun Pop-Punk and Easycore can be. We love how serious Emo and Post-Hardcore can be. We have the best of both worlds there. We could explore any theme with these styles of music. We love how the music makes you feel and gets you to headbang or sing along. They’re all great!
How do you decide what songs to perform live?
Black It Out is an internet band right now. We’re an E-band. Bryan and I focus on studio recordings right now. When we did play live, we didn’t have many songs to choose from, so we did all of our songs except our acoustic track at the time. Now, we’d do our favorite tracks. We’d more than likely play our Christmas songs all year round. They sound like Christmas songs but could be played at any time.

What plans do you have for the future?
We plan on promoting our new track “Live, Laugh, Love,” featuring Anndy Negative. Be sure to listen to it on Spotify! It’s available wherever music is streamed or sold. We also plan to record more music and rerelease some of our tracks from our comeback album, Resurgence, with an updated sound. We already did that with “Reflections,” featuring Promise Game. We also plan on changing the way we write music. So, in the future, we hope to have even better songs!
