An interview with Barbarian Prophecies
An interview with Barbarian Prophecies
What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?
Barbarian Prophecies is a death metal band from Spain (Lugo, Galicia) created in the year 2000. It was formed from the union of two bands: Barbarianth and Venomous Prophecies.
From there came Barbarian Prophecies, the result of the combination of the names and members of both bands.
We can name as influences: Black Sabbath, Deicide, Kataklysm, Dissection, Testament, Unleashed, Necrophobic, Enthroned, Opeth…
Each one of us has different influences and this makes the compositions of Barbarian Prophecies a mixture of styles. In fact, in our new album “Horizon” you can also find references from other genres such as electronic music, 80s pop or flamenco.
How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
We get inspired basically by listening to a lot of music, life experiences and, of course, sharing time together as a band. This last situation is the most important because the songs are originally fragments of other compositions that are combined and worked to make them sound their best, so that connection as a band is necessary for the music to take shape.
In terms of lyrical themes, lately our albums are inspired by the mysteries about the existence and the origin of the universe. And regarding musical influences, there is a great variety because each member of the band listens to different genres within extreme metal and that makes personal contributions to each track.
We don’t close ourselves to determinade ideas when when we start to compose. We are not afraid to experiment and combine ideas until we find something that sounds different. In fact, it’s a bit difficult to put ourselves the label of a musical genre because we mix many different styles. To sum up we usually say that we play death metal, but actually we should say that we play melodic death metal with various influences such as black metal or progressive… Or something similar.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
The band started in the year 2000 because we wanted to create a project with music that was not yet known in our city. We were influenced at that time by death/black metal bands from other countries and that’s why Barbarian Prophecies adopted this genre.
We liked it then and we still like it now… 21 years later.
How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
When we present a new album we always try to play it live. And once it’s done, we modify the set based on the audience’s response.
We try to make the show as energetic and precise as possible, for which we need a balance between fast and slower tracks or complexe and easy tracks… For example, we don’t choose songs in a row that require us too much effort when playing or we won’t to start with a fast song because we need to warm up properly. The setlist is never random.

What plans do you have for the future?
Our last gig was on 29th February 2020. It was the last gig before the pandemic situation arrives and now it’s difficult to recover the live activity because most of the concert halls are closed due to the sanitary restrictions caused by the covid-19. Our future plans will be to resume our live activity. We really want to present “Horizon” and we hope to be able to return to the stage this year 2021
