Eyes Wide Open hail from the same sort of tradition as In Flames. They are ferocious live, and on their new album The Upside Down they treat the listener to something groundbreaking.

“The Disheartened Song,” kicks things off. Right from the get go, you know this is a band who mean business. The rhythms are pounding and pulsating. The vocals are snarling and filled with energy and defiance. What a way to start.

“Black Clover,” moves into prime position from there. It takes the momentum from the opener and shifts up several gears to get that real pumped up feeling to it. Slivering through into the madness of the world.

“Solitude,” takes a moment to get going. That opening lick is something else entirely, and then comes the downpour. A pounding sensation that fills the listener with hope and dreams. A real turner.

“Til The Day We Die,” is simply anthemic. It is a song that really gets things going. Turning through the sonic overdrive, and continuing down the path of insanity for maximum outrage.

“Die Another Day,” has a little shift. A little turn and a bit of a pressage. The vocals take on a more melodic tint to them, but the chaos and the insistence remains present throughout.

“Enigma,” roars with the thunder. Pushing the plates through and delivering something quite compelling.

“Uncharted,” starts off with the gang vocals which really gets the listener intrigued by where this is going. When the onslaught begins the listener is left wanting to get involved in the moshpit as quickly as possible, and that my friends is how you know a song is of a top quality.

“The Upside Down,” takes a gander through the works. Slowly filtering through the changes. It’s more of a melancholic song, working its way through the upside down and bringing together changes for good and for bad.

“Final Resistance,” brings back the heaviness and unleashes it completely for the world and the madness therein.

“Silence Is Gold,” is haunting and slightly surreal. It then thunders into being with that riff. The riff that truly shows off where the band can go and where it does go.

“Edge of Tomorrow,” swaggers with unconstrained energy. A song that you just know is going to keep pushing boundaries and ensuring the listener is treated to everything they could want. This reviewer certainly was, from the melodic and frenetic guitars to the pulsating and frenetic melodies in the vocals.

“Fire Is The Solution,” closes things off with an absolute rager of a song. Twisting and turning, shaking off the normal views of the world and what a metal song should be, this song is the right closer.

The album is out now. Do yourself a favour and get it!
