What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
The foundations of the band are quite old, as is the name. Back then it felt like a good, short and easy name to use… kinda punchy. And it has multiple meanings, which we liked. At first, Flush was very much a Bad Religion type of melodic and fast punk rock band. We also really liked Pavement, which helped us overcome the fact that we were never technically that good musicians. 90s alternative rock is where we started, but there are lots of very good new bands out there today. Biffy Clyro has been inspirational and important for us, Against Me! as well, and most recently Spanish Love Songs has been spinning a lot. And Deftones! Must not forget Deftones.
Songwriting and themes?
Lyrically, I want it to be somehow personal. All songs have some personal connection and that makes them more meaningful to perform. I can’t write and perform songs about dragons, trolls or World War 2 – unless I find a connection to these or I can use them as a metaphor. E.g. our upcoming album has a song about a space satellite called Stella, but it’s really not a song about a satellite or space. It’s something as simple as a story about actual people and how they are together. Some of our songs are very explicit and down to earth, while some can have multiple interpretations or levels of meaning. When we sing “At least another round” it really is an ask to not close the bar just yet, but when we say “we’re not ready for the light”, you could interpret the “light” in multiple ways. Bottom line, our songs are about real things. Either it’s social or political commentary from our perspective, or it’s a personal story that we think people in our Flush community can relate to.

Why?
We write and compose the kind of music we like ourselves. Our bass player Eero put it nicely; he considers himself “the biggest fan of the band’s music”. It’s great if others like our music, but it genuinely is music we like ourselves.
Live?
Almost all our songs are arranged by us playing them together in our practice space, so they are already arranged for live performance. When recording, we sometimes use the benefits of the studio and add more layers, leads or harmonies, but we’ve never really struggled to play our songs live in a truthful form.

What plans do you have for the future?
Our second album ‘Noises’ comes out 29th November 2024 and that is of course our most near term milestone! It’ll be released worldwide by Wormholedeath Records and we’ve got two singles coming out prior to the album: ‘Headspinner’ on 25th October and ‘Dive’ on 8th November, both with very cool music videos to support the song. We play an album release show in our hometown Helsinki on Saturday 30th November, then we’ll break shortly for the Winter, and hopefully play the album in live clubs during the Spring of 2025.
