What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
Inspiration came from my (Matti Pulkkinen, founder), nickname, Ulti-Matti. Back in days, ~2000’s we drove around Suomussalmi, Finland, with my light blue Toyota and had fun times, so the phrase “Ulti-Matti and his magical Toyota” later then formed into a more metallic shape, Ultimatium, for the purpose of solo project.
Influences vary from Stratovarius to Dream Theather, so there’s bit of powermetal in us as well as prog metal
How and why do you write what you write?
During the songwriting, I don’t really have any themes in my mind, not at least in the beginning. I nowadays write songs only for the purpose of making an album, so at some point, I start to look more carefully that what kind of songs is the album missing and compose songs that I think the album needs. For the lyrics side, in the past we did not have any general theme, but lately, like in our previous album Virtuality, we’ve had tech / gaming-theme on our album
That’s a very good question… Our music style has evolved during the years, powermetal songs were composed just because those are really cool, but not in the older days, one starts to like more complicated stuff. I think I just want to challenge myself and band mates, I do complicated songs but still trying to have the catchiness in them. So, to summarize, we compose songs that we’d like to hear ourselves. Which is but ironic, because usually after release I don’t listen to those songs anymore, had enough of them already at that point, after thousands on repeats 😀

Live?
We don’t currently do live shows at all. That’s actually biggest reason why “Virtuality” came to be such epic album with five lead vocalists: we no longer cared if the songs are playable live. That opened up totally new freedom to compose and produce whatever we wanted.

What plans do you have for the future?
We’re currently making a new album and releasing one more video from Virtuality, using Ai generated images / animation. We released one video at start of January and next one goes out on mid-February
