Interview with Movment

Martin: I play drums and sing, so most of our songs are written from jams. It could be drums and bass or guitar, or synths and drums, and vocals and lyrics are added on top of that. It depends on what is inspiring us at that moment in time.

Kevin: Musically, I tend to like distorted guitar, and strong bass. But I have also being experimenting with synths and electronica. I think they add another dimension to rock music. So, the atmosphere of a song is created with synths, and the rock element is added with guitars. Bass is the driving force of songs, and drums are what bring it all together. These days I use Maschine mostly to write music. It creates a mood, which we add to. The lyrics tend to come after the music. As you can see from our latest album REINVENTION, the themes tend to be dark, and about living life and dying. That’s what interests us at this time. We also examine where we are in our lives and what has gone before, and what lies ahead. And most of songs can be interpreted differently. There are different angles to what we write. We expect listeners to make up their own mind as to what our lyrics mean. That is why there is a vagueness to them.

Kevin: We are where we are in life, so our music describes that situation. We could write about anything, it just so happens the music we listen to is profound and full of passion, so our music is similar. I would say our musical influences have had a huge impact on what we write, the themes we explore, and what is important to us musically and lyrically.

Martin: Our music and lyrics speculate on things relating to our lives and our future and our past. We are making observations, that are meaningful to us, but can also mean something to listeners. Ultimately, we are keen music fans, and we get a great deal out of music, so we would hope our listeners can relate to our songs and get something meaningful from them. Music is a powerful force for living, even if it is sad, or deep, or intense. It is not shallow to us, but an essential part of life. We hope this is reflected in our songs.

Kevin: We have our favourite songs, and these are normally the ones we play live. I’m sure most bands have songs that stand out. I think the live setting is completely different from recording in a studio. We try and replicate, to an extent, what we have recorded, but there is also scope for reinterpreting the songs in a different manner live, especially with synths and sequences. So, when we are rehearsing our new songs to play live, there is always the need to play them in a way that works, and not just play the recording note for note. Playing altered versions of our songs live make it more exciting for me.

Martin: Some of our songs will be better live, by their nature, and as singer, it is important that I am passionate about the songs I am singing. And songs sound different live, they have a vibrancy and energy that is not always captured in a studio.
I focus on this drive live, and I also concentrate on the connections in a live performance between band members and between us and the audience. Live performance has a number of unique factors which cannot be replicated in the studio. They are 2 completely distinct settings.
