What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
The name Polarity originated from the style of music that we write, we bring opposites into our music where we’ll have driving heavy hitting choruses intermixed with spacious, transient verses. We’re always pushing the social norms of song writing and no idea is ever left off the table when it comes to song creation.
While each member of the band has their own personal influences when it comes to music. polarity as a whole would most likely be most inspired by Tool and Dream Theater. It’s the two bands we also most consistently get related too which is a huge compliment in our books.
How do you approach songwriting?
Generally during our writing process the music itself is created first. Either of our guitarists, Michael Sitana or Sheldon Fernandes will bring a riff or general idea for a song, the rhythm section, Deren Bostanci (bass) and Julian Craig (drums) will add their grooves and flow to the creative process and Jasmine finally takes it from there. A neat thing Jasmine loves to do is meditate on the new songs and see what comes to her thematically, what does the song make her feel, what does it make her think of. And well, the rest is history from there
Why do you write the music that you do?
Honestly no clue haha… We write about our personal lives and the effects of the world on not only ourselves but on the wider populace as well. We write about situations that we are going through and what many others before us and after us will go through. We incorporate themes of space, time and alternative realities into our music as well as we like to be open to any possibilities. We stay relatable with our writing but at the same time are not afraid to delve into topics and themes that could be seen as ‘outside the box’ mentality.
How do you decide what to perform live?
We tackle this a few different ways. We have a general set list if we’re playing a show for new audiences where we’ll combine a good amount of heavy and softer songs, more complex and easier listening, really create a wide platter for any style of listener. However, if we’re going into a concert with friends or with bands where we know the genre will be heavier or lighter, we’ll adjust for that show specifically. I guess it’s the best part of having a wide array of styles within one band, we can really chameleon ourselves to fit any setting or genre.
What plans do you have for the future?
After we release our last Live off the Floor single at the end of August, we are planning to go headlong into writing mode for the next album. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of shows peppered in throughout the Autumn and Winter months but definitely getting the ball rolling on the next studio album will be our goal. We’re aiming for an early 2023 release with that and will definitely be planning some Canadian tours out to the East Coast and a few US dates as well!
