What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?
In College we had a freestyle competition and after my set, a friend in the audience compared me to Fat Joe and the name Joe Eazi kinda stuck from there. I rebranded to Eazi Beatz as I wanted my moniker to reflect me as an Artist, and as a producer.
How do you approach songwriting?
My songwriting process is quite organic and fluid. Sometimes I have an idea of a song I want to write but sometimes, I’m vibing in the studio with some friends and a song will materialise from that session. I’m a strong believer of letting the creative moment find you wherever you are and I always have a recording device on me (most times my phone) as an idea can pop into my head at any given time. Drives my wife crazy because sometimes im making dinner and chopping onions or garlic and all of a sudden, I create. Beat from the sounds.
Could you talk us through the process of writing?
How do you decide what to perform live?
I find this really hard to be fair but this is the most important step for me in getting ready to perform live. I try to balance songs I enjoy performing, with songs that will engage and excite the crowd. I want my listeners to be able to feel the music and energy, and leave the event wanting more and I will choose tracks to perform based on this. Depending on the event as well I might perform a little teaser of an unreleased track to give the crowd a taste of that to expect. I actually have a show next month in which I’m currently in the process of choosing the songs to perform.
