An interview with Fleischkrieg
An interview with Fleischkrieg
What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?
All the Neue Deutsche Harte bands out of Germany pretty much represent everything I love in music. Their influences are pretty much the same as mine. So I knew I wanted a German sounding name as a way to pay homage I guess. I know it’s kind of a cliche in the genre to have a german sounding name, but hey – that’s part of the fun too.
“FleischKrieg” translates to “Flesh War” in english, which I think pretty much describes the situation here on planet earth. There is always someone or something trying to steal your blood, sweat, and tears away. Life on this planet is a battle for self-preservation and sovereignty. Most of the themes in FleischKrieg songs are centered around this concept.
How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
Honestly, the songwriting process for myself really revolves around finding a sound with a particular emotion – and just carving away until I find the song underneath. The words always come later, and they’re based on how the music feels. It’s completely instinctual and primal, with just enough left brain activity to make sure the song stays around the 3:45-4min mark. Thomas and Nuda both have their own processes for contributing song ideas, but I would think it’s very similar.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
It just seems to be the most honest way to be truthful about what my life experience has taught me. And it relates to what a lot of others go through as well. Though our music might sound dark and ominous to some, I think FleischKrieg music is really about hope and fighting on in the darkness until you can escape the shitshow. I hope our music can offer some catharsis.
How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
You know, you do little tests here and there. The songs your friends get stuck in their heads, those are the ones you really want to play live. The more we play, the more we get a little distance from the songs and start to see them more in a third party light. That helps us be more objective, and actually enjoy the songs more.

What plans do you have for the future?
We’re really happy with the response we’ve been getting. We’d like to go on some bigger tours, anywhere in the world where audiences enjoy this type of music. Getting ready to work on some more studio recordings. Just keep grinding, see what opportunities come up along the way to keep playing live and networking within the industry.
