- What inspired the name of the band and what are your influences?
The band name means that there is light in the dark, and more specifically that the motivation for life and light lies within the reality that death and darkness are inevitable.
We’re influenced mainly by the greats, including Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Who and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Their music is timeless and it’s what we grew up on and still continue to listen to today.
2. How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?
Typically we write by picking a key and a time signature, then doing an improv session within those specifications. The body of the song usually comes first, with the bass and drums, then the guitar, then the vocals are written last. The lyrics are contingent on the theme we choose for the song as well, but we start off with several song ideas and then choose one of the ideas to match to the body of the song.
3. Why do you write the sort of music that you do?
We write the sort of music that we do because it’s raw, authentic, expressive, and leaves an impression. Nothing makes you think and get involved more than a driven hard-rock song.
4. How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?
Every one of our songs are typically played the same live as in the studio, with the exception of some extended solo sections and a little more breathing room for crowd involvement. Our live sets are always a combination of released songs and ones that we intend to release. Also, we typically play our favorites live, which are usually more fast-paced gritty songs; songs that the audience will find make it impossible for them to stand still.
5. What are your plans for the future?
We are currently planning our next out of state shows for the spring as well as more shows in the Metro Detroit area this fall and winter. We are also creating our next album for 2020 release. You can follow our journey online on Facebook and Instagram @darkserenityband. Thank you!
